Finale printmusic 8vb5/28/2023 ![]() ![]() But the 8 alone is consistently found, so I wouldn't use it for the octave (not doubled). I know it goes against Michel's (and engraving) standards, but I am quite sorry to see "8vb" get the heave-ho, and whenever I give in and update to 2012 I will refer back to Peter's example to re-create it!Ī single 8 is often used in piano music to imply doubling at the octave below. And in studio sight-reading situations where time and money are both on the line, a pianist or harpist won't have to expend the extra second to make sure which direction an "8va" is referring to! (same thing on a double stave part with a high treble clef line continuously almost overlapping the low bass clef line from the prior system). And since on printed paper the staves could not be spread for clarity like we can do in Finale, in an instance, for example, of a low bass clef piano line right above a high violin line, that "8vb" might be crammed in there, and it would be crystal clear which line it referred to. I'd also guess that "8vb" replaced "8va bassa" back in the hand-score and hand-copying days simply because it was a little quicker and took up a bit less space under the staves. I wonder if possibly "8vb" was included with all pre-2012 versions of Finale because commercial music copyists were consulted (along with engravers) and told the company that "8vb" was in common usage for both recording and live concert work. Having said all that, I must concur with Jetcopy that in commercial settings "8vb" is not only preferred but expected. I know Michel was concerned about a ton of folks jumping in to defend "8vb" - and I am having serious deja vu, I seem to recall a similar thread just a few months back. You don't just choose a letter in the middle of a word, willy-nilly, to make an abbreviation. It does, but doesn't stop it from being erroneous.Ĩva bassa (where "8va" stands for "ottava, and the "bassa" is self explanatory)Ĩba (where the "8" stands for "ottava", and the "ba" is truncated "bassa") Does this explanation of the "b" seem plausible? Many years ago, my composition teacher taught me 8vb stood for "ottava bassa". ![]() And so what? Everyone knows what it means, it's compact, and it conveys more information that simply writing 8va (which most people take to mean "up an octave," no matter what the literal Italian translation) below the staff.Īs to its American origins, L'Académie française may not like it, but things have to originate somewhere. It's true that the abbreviation is not analogous to 8va, but the phrase being abbreviated is one word longer, so it really can't be analogous. The objection to 8vb seems pedantic to me. I was all set to switch to plain "8", but if one doesn't have the dashed line to go with it-i.e., if it's below a single note-it looks funny: "8? What's that? A figured bass? A fingering?" Writing "8va" below seems wrong, somehow, but perhaps it's just me. Macbook Pro OSX 10.6.8, 2.66GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB RAM Even though 8vb isn't technically correct, in jazz/commercial settings, I would think that it's use is preferred. The idiom in which you're writing also is a factor. Sometimes you see the mark in English as 8ve or just as 8. So if it's above the music it means an octave above and if it's below the music it means ottava down. One might think that 8va stands for something like "octave above" but it stands for "ottava" - octave. In previous versions if you drew that shape under the music it defaulted to 8vb but in 2012 they have fixed it. This image has been viewed 13132 time(s). Mac Finale, 2011c & 2012, Dolet 6 plug-in, Mac OS X 10.6.8, iMac Intel Core i7, 2.93 GHz, 16 GB RAM In the pop up menu "Symbols", choose "Octave Down (8va)". If it confuses your player, you need a better player. It might also help to know that I am writing this for a 2-staff instrument?Ĩva is perfectly acceptable (and arguably, the only correct notation) as an indication below the staff to mark that the music is to be played one octave down.Ĩvb is an illogical abbreviation that makes no sense of the words which it is supposed to represent.Ī bunch of people will surely hop in and argue that it has always been, or whatever, but it's an American invention, it comes from notation in pop music, and it is linguistically incorrect. I assumed that if you applied this marking under music it'd default to 8vb, but no matter what it is 8va.įinale plays it back an octave below, but that isn't enough for the human player. ![]() I'm having a small problem with the 8vb sign in Finale 2012.
